The “Wheelie & Manual” Clinic

(Entire group must be using flat pedals and wearing helmets, back, knee, and elbow protection,
NO EXCEPTIONS). I personally will use the Fox Raceframe Impact guard. All riders must have
signed waivers on file and must pass a basic skills assessment and bicycle inspection before
clinic is to begin.

1. General familiarity with controls- be sure everyone is comfortable with using rear and
front brakes:
     a. Braking drills- try riding on slippery/dirt surface with front brake locked up.
     b. Rear braking practice- sprint 3 big pedal strokes, then hop on the rear brake as
late as possible without contacting an obstacle (cardboard box).
     c. Front braking practice- sprint 3 big pedal strokes, then hop on the front brake as
late as possible without contacting an obstacle (cardboard box) and without
lifting the rear wheel off the ground.
     d. Utilize both brakes to dial in strong late braking: sprint 5 big pedal strokes, then
use both brakes as late as possible but stopping before hitting that box.

2. Practice lifting front wheel with pedal pressure:
     a. Group rides on an oval course, and at one specific point on each straight away,
practices lifting the front wheel via pedal pressure and shifting of the hips.

3. Carrying the wheelie:
     a. Second marker is placed 1 yard after each of the wheel lift markers. Group rides
same oval course and tries to carry front wheel to second marker on each
straight away.
     b. Second marker is moved to 2 yards after each wheel lift marker.
     c. Second marker is moved to 3 yards.
     d. (continue as far as necessary).

4. Manual practice- lifting front wheel:
     a. Remove all additional markers. Group practices leaning back to rear tire and
using hips and arms to lift front wheel.

5. Carrying the manual:
     a. Second marker is placed 1 yard after each wheel lift marker. Group tries to carry
manual for 1 yard.
     b. Second marker is moved to 2 yards after each wheel lift marker.
     c. Continue as needed.
